March 1st Update: The Telangana government has begun implementing its free electricity program.
On Friday, Telangana’s power distribution providers started issuing “zero bills” to eligible households, marking the start of the “Gruha Jyothi” plan which offers 200 units of free electricity. Workers from power distribution companies were seen going door-to-door, delivering “zero bills” to qualified recipients. This initiative was one of the promises made by the Congress party during the recent Assembly elections.
Households with white ration cards (BPL families) that have applied for the Praja Palana scheme and linked their cards to Aadhaar will receive “zero bills” if their monthly electricity consumption is less than 200 units.
For example, a customer who used 114 units and previously paid Rs. 489 in bills received a “zero bill.” The billing software has been updated to produce these “zero bills.” This procedure, which started in Hyderabad, will soon be expanded to include the entire state. Discoms will provide the state government with information about the subsidy by the 20th of every month to facilitate the subsidy payment.
February 8th Update: 200 units of free electricity for tenants also
Amid rumors that the Gruha Jyothi Yojana, which provides 200 units of free electricity to state residents, would not apply to tenants, the Southern Telangana Electricity Distribution Company (DISCOM) has denied these claims. They clarified that tenants will also benefit from the scheme. However, the exact eligibility criteria have not yet been clarified by the government, which will soon issue guidelines related to this free electricity scheme.
